Chevrolet Chevelle SS 1969

Chevrolet included the SS396 package as on option on all the Chevelle models. And in this year, the entire range of Chevelles got new styling which included the tail lamps. The SS396 has come up with three different options of 325, 350 and 375bhp engines to choose from. Later during the end of 1969, in order to meet the new emission standards, the 396cubic engines were replaced by 402 cubic engines. But there were still complaints in the handling and the 4-speed transmission. On the interest of the drag racers, Chevelle has manufactured many limited edition models under the name COPO Chevelle. And this SS 1969 model has gained high reputation for Chevrolet in the muscle car industry.

Gm has got a new edict this time that made all the muscle car’s performance drop down. Till this year, there were constant efforts from Chevrolet to bring the most powerful engines to the muscle cars. But the GM’s edict was that unleaded fuel has to be used to meet the emission standards. And now, the standard engine is 350V8 which has a single exhaust. 400cid engine of the well know 3296 was renamed as “Turbo jet 400″ that dropped its 3500bhp to mere 300bhp to meet the new standards. A single headlight was designed for all the Chevelle cars. The buyers also have an option for hood stripes and cowl induction hood. Among all the models of the Chevelle, no car carried a badge other than “SS” except the LS5 model, which has a “SS 454″ badge on it.

Even in this year, the performance fans still laid in disappointment. This year saw the end of Chevelles. The journey of the conqueror which fought for almost a decade in the muscle car industry has come to and ends in this year. In this year, there was a complete redesign of the Chevelle and a sharp drop down in the performance of the cars.

The performance of the Chevelles continued to fall down in this year too. Chevelles had to drop down their bhp of the engines. Even the already reputed SS models had to cut down in the bhp due to the GM’s strong edict that all engines had to be reported with their net engine ratings. This made Chevrolet to make changes to its 350V8 to 175bhp, the 402 to 240bhp and the worse, the 454 to 270bhp. No more performance car was ever manufactured during those years.

This year, Chevrolet introduced the most powerful Chevelle of all time. This was possible because Gm has lifted it’s ban on engines larger than 400cid in midsize cars. And it was dues to this ban, Chevelle could not make a powerful muscle car till then. The new LS5 has a 454cid rated at 360bhp. And the optional choice for the enthusiasts is 450bhp. This had solid lifters, 4bolt mains and 11.25:1 compression. In this year, Chevrolet dropped the 325bhp and made the 350bhp as the standard at the entry level cars. The LS6 450 could reach 0-60 in 6.1seconds and a quarter mile in 13.7s @ 103mph.

American muscle car history

The American muscle car principle took life at first from people’s desire of having a car that isn’t just for basic transportation. Since the first muscle car was produced, in the early 60′s, people have always been thinking of new ways to make them faster and better. This soon became an art, an art that was fine tuned in the late 60′s by the major car companies of that time.

A leader of the American muscle car market was the 64 1/2 Mustang GT, amongst many other cars, cars that only upped the competition challenging the muscle car manufacturers to make them faster and better. Such an unique period in the American history, the 60′s American muscle cars were the symbol of something greater and bigger – and a living proof is the fact that these cars are still sought after more than 30 years later.

american muscle car ford mustang

Some of the big block cars of that time were: 429 Mustang, Shelby 427 Cobra, 426 Hemi Cuda, Boss 429 Mustang, 440 RoadRunner;and let’s not forget some of the smaller engine sized cars, like: 351 Mustang Mach 1, Z28 Camaro, Boss 302 Mustang, 340 Duster ( you can find pictures with all of them on our American muscle car gallery section ).

A reason, possibly the biggest, for these cars to be built with such powerful engines at that time was based on the fact that young people will soon start wanting one of those – and the American muscle car the youthful baby boomer public wanted to order a car like the car manufacturer planned. companies of that time were right. In the early 70′s,

Another reason these cars were produced was to support and advertise the Series II and Trans Am racing events that started in the mid 60′s. Muscle car manufacturers started pumping out new and improved models faster than ever – and so the muscle car war continued till the car insurance costs and the oil crysis slowly killed the market.

As far as the American muscle car history goes, the demand for powerful muscle cars hasn’t died, in fact in the early 70′s when the oil crysis settled down, muscle car manufacturers started offering special cars that could be called muscle cars, cars like: Mustang GT/Cobra, Mitsubishi 3000 GT, Viper, Camaros and the Trans Am Firebirds.

As far as car history goes though, the true Muscle cars came out of the 60′s and early 70′s.
