The American muscle car principle took life at first from people’s desire of having a car that isn’t just for basic transportation. Since the first muscle car was produced, in the early 60′s, people have always been thinking of new ways to make them faster and better. This soon became an art, an art that was fine tuned in the late 60′s by the major car companies of that time.
A leader of the American muscle car market was the 64 1/2 Mustang GT, amongst many other cars, cars that only upped the competition challenging the muscle car manufacturers to make them faster and better. Such an unique period in the American history, the 60′s American muscle cars were the symbol of something greater and bigger – and a living proof is the fact that these cars are still sought after more than 30 years later.
Some of the big block cars of that time were: 429 Mustang, Shelby 427 Cobra, 426 Hemi Cuda, Boss 429 Mustang, 440 RoadRunner;and let’s not forget some of the smaller engine sized cars, like: 351 Mustang Mach 1, Z28 Camaro, Boss 302 Mustang, 340 Duster ( you can find pictures with all of them on our American muscle car gallery section ).
A reason, possibly the biggest, for these cars to be built with such powerful engines at that time was based on the fact that young people will soon start wanting one of those – and the American muscle car the youthful baby boomer public wanted to order a car like the car manufacturer planned. companies of that time were right. In the early 70′s,
Another reason these cars were produced was to support and advertise the Series II and Trans Am racing events that started in the mid 60′s. Muscle car manufacturers started pumping out new and improved models faster than ever – and so the muscle car war continued till the car insurance costs and the oil crysis slowly killed the market.
As far as the American muscle car history goes, the demand for powerful muscle cars hasn’t died, in fact in the early 70′s when the oil crysis settled down, muscle car manufacturers started offering special cars that could be called muscle cars, cars like: Mustang GT/Cobra, Mitsubishi 3000 GT, Viper, Camaros and the Trans Am Firebirds.
As far as car history goes though, the true Muscle cars came out of the 60′s and early 70′s.
